London / EuroWire / – A collaborative scientific investigation reveals that human-induced global warming is a direct driver of the extreme dry conditions currently affecting Europe, offering compelling evidence that climate change is intensifying drought across the continent. Researchers from around the world determined that rising temperatures are primarily responsible for the severe soil and water shortages, surpassing the influence of mere rainfall deficits. Following a historic heatwave in June, the region faces widespread wildfires, stringent water restrictions, and severely lowered water levels in rivers. The study demonstrates that the elevated temperatures today accelerate moisture loss from soils and water bodies, significantly increasing the risk of extreme aridity. Despite spring rainfall falling below historic averages, the intense heat caused by climate change has greatly amplified the overall severity of the drought.

The World Weather Attribution group released findings illustrating how rising temperatures actively diminish natural water resources. Mariam Zachariah of Imperial College London pointed out that the drought’s main cause is not just decreased rainfall but a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits in land. This means that even in areas where rainfall patterns stay relatively steady, drought risk continues to escalate. Scientists explain that each 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature enables the atmosphere to hold roughly seven percent more water vapor, which in turn causes more rapid evaporation from soils and vegetation on a broad scale.
Using extensive weather data and sophisticated modeling, researchers quantified how much more likely these dry conditions are compared to a climate 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their results showed that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to extreme dryness than they would be in a non-human-influenced climate. In eastern Europe, the probability of similar soil moisture deficits has increased by a factor of 11. The analysis also highlighted that the likelihood of extremely high evaporative demand between April and June in western Europe has risen approximately 80 times. Rainfall deficits that once would not have caused severe drought are now leading to much drier soils.
Temperature Rises and the Growing Thirst of the Atmosphere
Dominik Schumacher, a researcher from ETH Zurich, underscored that the trend of soil drying in spring before summer has become more pronounced. He explained that as temperatures increase, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, drawing vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of an unusually wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created highly conducive conditions for large wildfires. The rapid soil drying primed the landscape for ignition, leading to severe fires in multiple countries. The findings confirm that climate change worsens drought across Europe and shifts traditional weather patterns into increasingly dangerous cycles.
The agricultural sector endures extraordinary stress as widespread soil moisture loss threatens crops. Drought conditions are exerting immense pressure on farmers, resulting in historic crop failures across various borders. France is projected to record its smallest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating a major disruption to regional food supplies. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further jeopardizing the stability of the agricultural supply chain. Increasing Water Vapor Capacity with Rising Temperatures
Hydrological consequences are compounding the economic damages, as unusually low river levels disrupt vital cargo shipping routes. Major disruptions in key waterways reflect the growing severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced river flows threaten hydropower generation, especially in regions heavily reliant on consistent water supply. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirms that recent June was the hottest on record for western Europe. Many countries are now enacting emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential drinking water use to conserve limited supplies.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more frequent. They stress that these extreme evaporative conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. Should global emissions push temperatures up to 2.8 degrees Celsius, the likelihood of such conditions could double. Without swift and decisive measures to cut emissions, experts warn Europe faces a future of increasingly scorching and persistent dry summers.
