Obesity-Linked Deaths in Belgium Contribute Significantly to Heart Disease and Dementia Mortality

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – The public health institute Sciensano has unveiled Belgium’s first detailed assessment of mortality associated with obesity, attributing 9,509 deaths in 2022—or 8.2 percent of the nation’s total fatalities—to an excessively high body mass index. This equates to more than one death per hour, with weight-related health issues responsible for over 150,000 years of life lost across the country, establishing a new baseline for Belgian health policy planning.

Belgian study links obesity to heart disease and dementia deaths
Scientific researchers study cardiovascular disease data to improve public health prevention.

The study involved an extensive epidemiological analysis of underlying causes of death to understand how increased body mass index influences chronic illnesses. It identified cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, ranked second, linked to 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases caused 1,171 deaths, with chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers also making significant contributions to mortality rates.

Data segmentation by demographics demonstrates that the risk of death related to excess weight grows notably with age. The highest prevalence of weight-related health issues was found among individuals aged 65 and above. Gender analysis showed that male mortality rates generally exceeded those of females in most age groups. However, women aged 85 and older recorded higher overall death figures, a pattern attributed by epidemiologists to the longer average lifespan among women.

Higher Mortality Risks Seen in Population Over Sixty Five

Regional differences in mortality linked to obesity were evident across Belgium’s territory. The southern region of Wallonia reported the highest death rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Flanders recorded the lowest impact, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Experts suggest that these regional disparities reflect differences in socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and healthcare access across the Belgian federation.

This data release coincides with evaluations led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health strategies. Public health authorities are using these insights to gauge the long-term economic burden posed by chronic non-communicable diseases. The researchers employed a comparative risk assessment approach, calculating the population attributable fraction for each condition to establish baseline estimates that will inform future prevention efforts.

Cerebrovascular Diseases Are the Third Leading Cause of Death

On the European scale, agencies such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional policy responses. The Belgian findings align with broader European Union efforts aimed at reducing premature deaths from non-communicable conditions. The World Health Organization continues to advocate for integrated, multi-sectoral strategies targeting metabolic risks through public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention.

These results provide a solid foundation for health authorities seeking to decrease the prevalence of high body mass index across Western Europe. By quantifying mortality figures and the years of life lost, policymakers can better allocate resources toward screening, targeted interventions, and lifestyle management programs. As regional health authorities review the data, national frameworks are expected to prioritize early preventative care to diminish chronic disease prevalence nationwide.
