AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded a total of 244 new first-time asylum applications, marking the lowest monthly number in ten years. According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, this figure represents a decrease of approximately 65% from the 697 applications filed in July 2025. When including both initial and subsequent claims, Austria’s total asylum submissions for the month reached 840. These numbers continue a notable year-on-year downward trend observed across the nation during the first seven months of 2026.

Austria records lowest first-time asylum claims in 10 years
Asylum applications in Austria fell 45% year on year during the first seven months of 2026.

Between January and July, Austria received 5,743 asylum applications, significantly less than the 10,442 lodged during the same period in the previous year, indicating roughly a 45% decline. The monthly data differentiates between original first-time applications and later or repeat submissions. Consequently, the July total of 244 refers to new first-time cases, while the overall figure of 840 encompasses several categories of applications. This separation offers further insight into Austria’s current asylum landscape.

In July, Syrian nationals comprised the largest nationality group, with 267 asylum applications recorded. Most of these applications involved children born in Austria rather than individuals who had recently entered the country. Austria has maintained restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases, with authorities recording 60 related entries in 2026, a sharp decline from 853 during the same period in 2025. These figures reflect another substantial year-on-year decrease in that category.

First-time asylum claims are surpassed by departures

During the first seven months of 2026, the number of departures significantly exceeded the count of new first-time asylum claims. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left Austria through voluntary departures or compulsory removals, including 4,615 removals and 4,241 voluntary departures. Austria also completed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum requests among member states.

A further substantial decline was reported in irregular migration detections at Austria’s eastern border. Police apprehended 339 individuals in Burgenland from January to mid-August 2026, compared to nearly 16,000 apprehensions in the same period of 2023. Austrian authorities continue cross-border enforcement efforts with Hungary, including Operation Fox, focusing on migrant smuggling and unauthorized crossings near the shared border.

The July figures reinforce a longer-term downward trend

The July asylum data follows a lower volume of applications during the first half of 2026, when Austria recorded approximately 5,000 submissions. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented these latest figures as part of the government’s routine migration updates. Austria has also continued voluntary return initiatives involving Syrian nationals, with 240 Syrians leaving voluntarily in July. The comprehensive data set includes asylum claims, removals, voluntary departures, Dublin transfers, and border apprehensions across various categories.

Overall, Austria’s July statistics reflect reductions across multiple measures compared to previous periods. The number of original first-time asylum applications dropped to 244, the lowest in ten years. The total asylum applications for the month reached 840, with the January-July total at 5,743. Border apprehensions in Burgenland remained well below 2023 levels. Collectively, these official figures offer an updated overview of asylum requests, departures, and irregular migration in Austria for 2026.
