ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency response in Lower Austria issued compulsory evacuation orders immediately on Friday following the rapid outbreak of a forest fire in the Föhrenwald pine woodland near St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Officials confirmed that a significant wildfire struck St. Egyden in Austria as aggressive flames neared within 50 meters of residential areas, activating the highest emergency alert level, Level B4. Civil defense teams prioritized the swift relocation of residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Coordination between municipal authorities and regional disaster response units was crucial in evacuating at least 250 residents from the danger zone. St. Egyden Mayor Christa Tisch verified that emergency crews evacuated six individual homes along Bahnstraße and 50 units across five apartment buildings in the Waldstrandsiedlung neighborhood. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian teams provided crisis support and essential supplies.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire services across the Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt districts responded swiftly. They worked alongside specialized aerial containment units, deploying five police helicopters, two private commercial aircraft, and a Black Hawk military helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross dispatched 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to oversee evacuation efforts and assist affected families.

This incident marks the second destructive blaze in the Föhrenwald area in less than two weeks, following an earlier 100-hectare forest fire that required five days of suppression efforts. Officials confirmed that the new fire started on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds carrying dense smoke across regional transit routes. Public safety agencies warned drivers to stay clear of main roads near Neunkirchen to allow emergency vehicles to access the scene without obstruction.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, stated that emergency crews established a containment perimeter around the main fire to prevent further spread. Firefighters also responded to several smaller fires that ignited spontaneously in nearby communities, including Strelzhof and Netting. Authorities emphasized that operational shifts were strictly regulated to ensure ground crews did not work more than 12 hours straight during the intense suppression efforts.

Preliminary investigations by law enforcement agencies are underway to determine the exact cause of the ignition in the afternoon. Officials noted that the earlier wildfire in the same pine forest was caused by legacy World War II phosphorus ammunition buried beneath the ground. While no direct link has been established between the two fires, environmental conditions in Lower Austria remain extremely dry, heightening regional wildfire risks.

Throughout Friday evening, emergency services kept active monitoring stations around the Föhrenwald perimeter to ensure the safety of neighboring residential areas. Civil defense authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or first responders during the initial evacuation phase. Experts in engineering and forestry plan to continue perimeter stabilization and hot-spot suppression in the coming days.
