LONDON / RankWire.AI / – In July, the number of graduate job openings across the UK plummeted nearly 50% compared to the same month last year, signaling increased challenges for new entrants to the workforce. Adzuna reported that there were 8,383 advertised graduate positions during July, down from 15,397 in July 2025. This drop equates to roughly 46%, and it represents the lowest total since the platform started tracking graduate vacancies in April 2016. The peak in graduate job listings had exceeded 55,000 back in 2017.

The competition for jobs has also intensified in the wider UK labour market. In July, there were 2.14 jobseekers per vacancy, an increase from 1.93 in the same month last year. This ratio accounts for all employment opportunities across the economy rather than just graduate roles. The figures for graduate vacancies are based on online advertisements gathered from over 1,000 sources, reflecting advertised positions rather than every potential job for a university graduate.
Official statistics indicate a weakening demand in the broader employment sector. The Office for National Statistics estimated that between May and July 2026, there were 707,000 vacancies, which is a decrease of 6,000 from the previous three months. These figures are also 19,000 lower than the same period last year. Additionally, the unemployment-to-vacancy ratio rose to 2.5 in April through June, up from 2.3 during the same timeframe last year.
More Competition Faces Future Graduates
This summer saw a record number of young people securing UK undergraduate placements. UCAS announced that by results day on August 13, 262,820 UK 18-year-olds had gained university places, marking a 3% increase from the 255,130 at the same stage in 2025. The UK 18-year-old entry rate reached 31.6%. These figures provide context for a labour market where an increasing number of future graduates will compete for professional and entry-level jobs.
Employer competition for graduate candidates is already intense. According to the Institute of Student Employers, just over one million applications were submitted during the 2024/25 recruitment cycle. On average, each graduate vacancy attracted 140 applications. These numbers highlight the high demand among applicants for established graduate recruitment channels, which coincides with the sharp decline in advertised graduate roles observed in the latest monthly jobs report.
UK Employment Landscape Remains Challenging
Since the implementation of changes to employer National Insurance contributions in April 2025, employment costs have shifted notably. The contribution rate increased to 15% from 13.8%, and the annual secondary threshold decreased from £9,100 to £5,000. The latest vacancy survey from the national statistics office indicates some small businesses are limiting hiring due to higher labour and operational expenses. The data also shows a decline in vacancy numbers across nine of the 18 industry sectors surveyed.
While discussions about artificial intelligence are increasingly part of the conversation around entry-level roles, official analysis on its specific impact remains limited. Skills England stated in August that it is difficult to isolate AI’s effect from broader labour market trends. Meanwhile, from January to March 2026, 1.012 million individuals aged 16 to 24 were outside education, employment, or training, representing 13.5% of the age group and an increase of 89,000 from the previous year.
